Marvel Studios has finally dropped some beautiful concept art from Deadpool & Wolverine, showcasing a batch of designs for Henry Cavill’s highly-anticipated Wolverine cameo.
This behind-the-scenes look allows fans to get even closer to the development process of Cavill’s portrayal and where it could have gone in a different direction.
Now, with Deadpool & Wolverine killing it at the box office, fans are getting treated to these exclusive artworks that reveal what could have been.
Among the newly leaked images are several concept artworks of Cavill’s Wolverine, some fans frankly naming him “Cavillrine.”
Among the great designs was an homage to Hugh Jackman’s classic look for Wolverine: complete with signature mutton chops, a white vest, and rugged jeans.
This homage encapsulates feelings brought on by Jackman’s portrayal, mixed with Cavill’s presence.
Another concept brings in the early 2000s Wolverine, channeling Jackman with his signature cigar and motorcycle as an ode to the gritty and somewhat rebellious demeanor of this character.
These designs reflect not only respect toward Wolverine’s cinematic past but also new facets brought forth through Cavill’s interpretation.
Conceptual artist Wesley Burt came forward to share other designs that put a fresh spin on Cavill’s role.
One of them features a plaid shirt, an outfit Jackman sported in the 2009 X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie. Where this one is entirely based in familiarity, this takes imaginative liberties that underline Cavill’s physicality and sense of style.
It’s a call from Marvel with regard to Wolverine’s classic look that allows Cavill to flex his muscles and bring an element of new intensity to the character.
After the MCU debut, Cavill took to Instagram with the following, flexing in all of his Wolverine glory.
He even threw in a reference to his Justice League reshoots with DC, relating the two superhero universes a bit.
In an interview with Variety, the director, Shawn Levy, has waxed poetic on the subject of Cavill’s involvement, saying, “The minute Ryan Reynolds coined the phrase ‘Cavillrine,’ I was in.
As per Levy, Cavill did not hesitate over his cameo—he understood it was something lighthearted but reverent to his legacy as a hero for DC.
Although it hasn’t been confirmed yet that Cavill will be playing this Wolverine in any future Marvel Cinematic Universe film, the leaking of this concept art has sparked worldwide speculation and hype.
These conceptual works shall be held on to by fans for the time being in the hope of what’s next with the timeless character.
